1. Choose quality. You want furniture that’s attractive, comfortable and durable—built to withstand the elements and look great year after year. Today’s quality is better than ever, thanks to advances in furniture and textile technology, such as sturdy synthetic wicker and weather-resistant, colorfast fabrics.
2. Be colorful. Outdoors, you have the opportunity to use stronger colors than you might be comfortable with indoors. Fuchsia cushions, anyone? That said, there’s nothing wrong with neutral, natural shades, such as sand, slate gray or beige. You can add pops of color with patterned accent pillows and accessories, the same as you’d do indoors.

4. Finish the floor. If you’re furnishing a covered porch, treat the floor as you would an indoor space: Use all-weather rugs to define seating areas and add a polished appearance. Today’s indoor-outdoor rugs are even appropriate for use on open patios and decks, where rugs provide good looks, slip protection and bare-footed comfort.
5. Fire it up. Whether on a porch or as a freestanding patio feature, an out - door fireplace provides the same dramatic focal point as an indoor hearth, and it extends the outdoor living season deep into fall or even winter. In open areas, a fire pit admirably serves the same purpose. Tall, gas-fired heaters, as you’ve seen at outdoor cafes, are a less expensive alternative.
6. Ensure evening ambiance. There’s magic to being outside after sunset. As in your indoor living spaces, soft lighting is key to creating a relaxing night - time environment. Few people have enough sources of lighting in their rooms, indoors or out. For your porch or patio, consider LED or incandescent lights with dimmer switches, battery-operated candles or lanterns, real candles, old-fashioned gas lanterns (there’s nothing more charming), and landscape lighting that extends the magic into the distance.
7. Favor functionality. The function of today’s outdoor living spaces goes far beyond comfortable seating. Outdoor kitchens, built-in bars with entertainment centers and cabanas for lounging are all part of the current scene. Even if you’re not into lavish entertaining, you’ll appreciate the convenience of a nearby refrigerator stocked with cold drinks.
