Designer Lookout
In this Ritz-Carlton penthouse, every design decision was made with one main goal in mind: Favor the fabulous view.
Designers that specialize in high-rise interiors have a saying: When the view outside is the star, don’t compete.
In the case of Westchester Magazine’s Dream Home 2014: Penthouse Edition at The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Westchester, in White Plains, New York, the view could hardly have been better: Floor-to-ceiling windows on the 40th floor offered sweeping vistas of Long Island Sound, the New York City skyline, the lower Hudson Valley and the mountain peaks beyond.

Natalie Brown kept the furniture low and sleek so as not to interfere with the stunning view. Lucite and glass-topped tables are perfectly unobtrusive, while cloud-like shearling and star-spangled sequins mimic the sky. In a masterful touch, a large mirror makes a structural pier all but disappear, as it multiplies the view.
Looking back, Brown sees the project as a relative breeze. “Except for one special-order piece, everything I chose was in stock at Safavieh,” she notes, “which says a lot about the breadth of our selection. The space came together very quickly, in part because the view was my unifying principle. All of the pieces had to relate not only to each other, but also to the magical lookout.”

Every seat at the dining table offers a magnificent view. It’s even in the silver centerpiece.
