Balanced Over Broadway
Transitional décor harmonizes with the owner’s art collection in a light-filled modern apartment.

With three kids and a dog in residence, the owner of a newly constructed apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side had special design requirements: Create a pleasing backdrop for the display of her collected artwork, but select furnishings that are worry-free and easy to maintain.
“The space has large windows overlooking upper Broadway, so we could really take advantage of the light,” says Safavieh designer Luis Ramirez. “In the bedroom, we used mirrored surfaces, gold, silver and light neutral tones for a look that’s celestial, clean and effortless. In the living room, we selected a just-so shade of blue that’s open, free and reflects a lot of light. And you wouldn’t know it from looking, but all of the fabrics were chosen for their durability, fulfilling the owner’s request.”
Transitional styles of furniture were selected to bridge the contemporary architecture and the owner’s paintings, which are mainly traditional. “Although the individual elements span several centuries,” says Ramirez, “the finished space is completely harmonious. The family loves it!”
