Calliope is the collection’s most elaborate patterned design, developed by O’Brien from etchings on a set of circa 1940 glasses by Dorothy Thorpe, one of his favorite designers. The freeform motif is like a pointillist vine that has been blown up to a large scale. The field is organized into finely proportioned stripes equivalent to the width of the wraparound border, for a keen balance of abstract linear pattern and a very traditional banded field. While such design origins may seem unusual bordering on unlikely, the result is a carpet with an artistic modernist bent, yet with all the complexity of a much earlier Oriental. |
